Although I was born in the UK and have been living in the various Western cultures for a long time, being a Chinese means that I've a 'thing' for all things superstitious... So I was very happy when my post count went to this particular number, I though I better save an image of it...

Asians and particularly Chinese are full of superstitions and anything that's may sound or appear to related to good fortune are seized upon as signs of good luck.

'3' in Cantonese sounds like 'live' or 'alive' (or even 'birth', depends on context) and '8' sounds like 'rich' or 'get rich'.

'4', in both Cantonese and Mandarin, sounds a lot like 'death' or 'dead' or 'die'... Has your colleague gotten a death wish??

Huh!! Even the amount they pay was full of superstition!! Chinese and Japanese count very differently from the West. Hence the number 1,000,000 (a million) is counted as 100,0000 (one hundred "ten thousand", "ten thousand" being a single word).

So, for $282,000, it would sound like 'easy, sure, getting rich; easy money'...
