| I've a boss for life... |
|
December 7, 2003 (You must be asking: "Where are you going with this??") Now that things have settled down a little, I've come to conclusion that I can't live without her! So I asked her to be my boss for the rest of our lives... And she agreed!! --- December 8, 2003 Thank you all for your well wishes!! --- December 8, 2003 quote: We were just getting ready for the dinner that I cooked (I usually cook a chili on Saturday night) and I was complaining that I couldn't find the book I was reading and I just 'happen' to have found it under the sofa - which conveniently kneeing on the floor... I asked if she'd like to boss me around for the rest of our lives, and she said yes... --- December 8, 2003 quote: Hehe... We actually haven't gotten the ring yet... After months of research and sounding her out, I have originally looked at half a dozen designs... Now, the selection process is narrowed down to just two designs of the ring and two possible cut of the diamond.
The final product will look something like the above ring... but the diamond will be different. It will either be a round or oval rock with a brilliant cut. We are going over to the designer on Thursday evening to do a number of things: 1) measure the size of her ring finger, 2) let her pick from the two remaining designs, 3) let her pick a shape of the diamond. Apparently, it is now the Christmas rush, so we'd probably start the process now and ended up picking up the ring in mid- to late January... --- December 8, 2003 Thanks! That's the least I could do... She means so much to me. --- December 8, 2003 quote: btw, just out of curiousity, does she
read these forums? Rings or rigs... That's actually very appropriate question. To be completely honest, I feel kinda guilty that all my rigs together would still worth (not to be confused with cost) more than the ring and stone... Of course, this is, to date, the most important single investment I've ever made. And happily so! On a different note, on the whole - no, the Ruler_of_spike doesn't read these forum pages... However, she does occasionally see a thread or two when she checks on me ( ) or call me for dinner or something... --- December 8, 2003 quote: Of course, if you slip the ring
designer a back-hander to replace the diamond with a cubic zirconium, you
could save enough for another SETI-crunching-Xeon for yourself. Thanks... Just in case you guys are curious, the lady in question worths her weight in diamonds, never mind a small fraction of it! And, fear not, as I've said in my reply to stanmanfoo's thread, my rigs still worth more than the stone and ring. (Obviously, it may not be the case 6 months down the line. ) --- December 8, 2003 quote: Hehe... Not sure output, but she certainly worth more than I or my rigs will ever do. --- December 9, 2003 quote: I know I would go for a nice ring with
diamonds and whatever she wants on it and not think twice about how many
rigs I can buy instead. Thanks for that, dude. That's my thinking entirely. --- December 9, 2003 Well, lucky that I don't really look at it as 'biting the dust'... As our fearless leader, Jim_, would say that he's the lucky one, I feel that I'm in a very similar situation... I have to be lucky to have spent over 2.5 years living with someone, with all my bad habits, geek hobbies, being unemployed, etc and she's still with me! I'm lucky! --- December 10, 2003 quote: Hehe... You've gotten that one right! The past couple of weeks have been the first time in many months I feel totally at ease - with my personal being, my personal life and those around me and with my work. While I was a little nervous during the short period between making up my mind regarding my own commitment to the Ruler_of_spike and actually asking her, all in all, I'm about as content with things about and around me as I've been for years. One thing about our relationship is that no matter how bad things appears to be at the present, we never stop looking forward to the future and the possibilities it may bring. The Ruler_of_spike is particular good at doing that. And between us, there's an energy to drive things forward. We're very different in personality and interests, but we share many things that even more fundamental, like attitude, values and outlook. It is an additional reassurance I feel now that we're committing ourselves to each other. --- Man, the past 24 hours has been a heck of a day!! (All times GMT) 3:30am: I got up... just! --- December 24, 2003 Thanks, guys! Yeah, it was a heck of a day and a heck of a trip!! I've use my rather crappy digitcam to try and take a close-up shot of the stone, but it just won't focus properly (click on pic for the larger image)... For those who know about these things (and anyone who's bought or is planning to buy a piece of diamond jewelry for his love one should) - the stone has the following characteristics: 1.46ct, G color, VVS1 clarity, very good cut, excellent symmetry. It has been certified by the Antwerp Diamond High Council... In case you wonder how much I paid for this, I've picked a few UK and US online diamond sales site for reference picking the nearest they've on offer to I've managed to pick up ... Needless to say, I paid less than those quoted prices! This is
DiamondHunt.co.uk. Prices are in GBP and the current exchange rate is GBP=US$1.75!!!
This place is a complete rip off!!! This next place is
Diamonds.com, which is quite a popular site. The prices are a lot more
reasonable, but they don't have any stones in the right quality. Finally, Original-Diamonds.co.uk
is a very reasonable site based in the UK and gives you US$ prices. It
allows to me pick nearly identical diamond to what I wanted... Again, don't forget, I didn't pay anywhere close to these exuberant prices... Hence it was well worth the trip and the time spent traveling. --- December 25, 2003 quote:
Hehe... Catching us out isn't that easy... It's actually quite easy - she doesn't do milkshakes... and she has no opinion on it. I don't really do milkshakes either. We have yogurts on a daily basis though. --- February 14, 2004 Well, after over a month of going to and from the jeweler, I finally picked up the Ruler_of_spike's engagement ring!! I picked it up this morning and presented it to her - on St. Valentine's Day!! --- February 16, 2004 Thanks folks for all your kind regards and comments! Calum: I don't know about a 'minor geological phenomenon' (thanks ), but it sure worth my 23hr round-trip over to Antwerp... While we spent a great deal of time 'ouuing' and 'ahhing' at the stone before it went to the jeweler, we could not believe how well it turned out. Alicia: Thanks for the comments... I'm not sure about a live-feed on the wedding, but I'd probably post some pics, post-event... I'll try and get some views on the milkshake question after the 'in-laws' leave us alone (they're in town at the moment)... i_wolf: 'Many Happy Returns'... Eh, no offense, but no thanks, seriously! --- February 16, 2004 quote:
Eh... I've been told that it's going to be around end-of-August / beginning-of-September time... I guess I'll be told as the time gets nearer. --- February 16, 2004 quote:
Hmmm... I think we're thinking along the lines of plain platinum bands. A nice thick, chunky one for me... I've a 10mm-wide, 2mm-thick sterling silver band on the right hand equivalent of the ring finger now, and I'm thinking of something similar for the wedding band. --- February 16, 2004 In the end, it was well worth the trip... Just looking at the end result, I'd gladly do it all over again! |
