April 24, 2003

Today, April 24, 2003, was my last day with the employer whom I've been working for for the past 5 1/4 years. I’ve been laid off as part of the firm’s cost-cutting strategy.

For those who've been around the forums would remember that I worked for an investment bank. I don't expect much sympathy from those who’re outside banking as investment bankers have traditionally attracted lots of negative publicity as people who don’t do much work and getting paid ‘big bucks’. (BTW, I’ll be the first person to testify that, in fact, is not the case unless you're one of the 'big swinging dicks'.)

Right now, I’m too numb and shock to do anything or express any opinion. I’m just posting here to kind of vent my sorrow...

I'm humbled by the generous sympathy and good wishes you guys give me. Reading your encouragements is a big boost for me and while I'm still feeling kind of numb from what's happened yesterday, I'm taking advantage of the fact that this is probably the first time in many years I can sit down and think about what I want to do. As of now, I don't have any plans. I intend to spend the next week or so evaluating my position and figure out what I want to do next.
